Introduction to 800G Transport Module

Currently people worldwide are focusing on the news of the tariff war between The United States and the rest of the world, but the technology keeps improving, and still developing fast. the 800G network is getting closer. We shall offer a quick introduction to the 800G transport modules.

The 800G transport module covers wide form-factors, such as QSFP-DD800/QSFP-DD/QSFP, OSFP800/OSFP, and also SFP-DD/SFP56. The 800G transport modules feature native PAM4 and NRZ modulation methods. The 800G Transport Module provides the following Ethernet rates: 800GE, 400GE, 200GE, 100GE with no FEC, RS (528,514) FEC or full RS (544,514) FEC, 50GE on SFP56, 40GE, 25GE (FEC or bypass), 10GE and 1GE. It also supports OTU4, OTU3, OTU2e, OTU1e/OTU1, and OTU2.

An OSFP/OSFP800 module includes an air-cooled integrated heatsink (IHS) with a closed top or an open top, while an OSFP-RHS/OSFP-RHS800 module makes contact to a riding heatsink which is part of the host. Optionally, an OSFP/OSFP800 module may use an extra riding heatsink OSFP (any variant) is not compatible with OSFP-RHS (any variant).

The QSFP-DD/QSFP-DD800 specifications are applicable to pluggable modules or direct attach cables based on multimode fiber, single mode fiber or copper wires. QSFP-DD/QSFP-DD800/QSFP application reference model is shown in the following figure, where the focus of this specification is mechanical, electrical and thermal behavior at the interface between a host and the QSFP-DD/QSFP-DD800 modules.
