Introduction to QSFP-DD800 and QSFP112

The Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable Double Density (QSFPDD) Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) group announces the release of a hardware specification revision 7.0 for updating QSFP-DD, The main topic is introducing QSFP-DD800 and QSFP112 form factor.

QSFP-DD is the premier 8-lane data center pluggable module form factor. This QSFP-DD optical module designed backward compatible with existing QSFP form factors and provides maximum flexibility for end-users.

The group announces the release of an updated Common Management Interface Specification (CMIS) revision 5.0 for QSFP-DD, QSFP-DD800, and QSFP112. The CMIS defines the host-to-module interactions needed to ensure that modules will initialize and operate consistently. This revision provides several extensions and a comprehensive technical and editorial consolidation. It is harmonized with timing parameters defined in QSFP-DD MSA HW Spec revision 5.1 previously published and in this revision 6.0. CMIS is broadly implemented across the industry, beyond just the QSFP/QSFP-DD family of module types. The feedback from many implementers has also been consolidated to improve and extend the specification.

The QSFP-DD800 cage and connector is an incremental design with enhanced signal integrity and thermal which is backward compatible to 8 lanes QSFP-DD and 4 lanes QSFP28. The QSFP112 cage and connector is an incremental design with enhanced signal integrity and thermal which is backward compatible to 4 lane QSFP28/QSFP+. The QSFP-DD800/QSFP112 supports up to 112 Gb/s (56 GBd) per lane electrical operation based on PAM4 signaling and is expected to be compliant with IEEE 802.3ck and OIF 112G-VSR when published.
